Vote Walsh to support youth
As a recent graduate of Milaca High School, supporting our youth is important to me, and underage alcohol use is one of the most serious problems facing young people today.
The Social Host Ordinance has been discussed in Mille Lacs County for years as one way to prevent underage alcohol use. Each year, excessive drinking by underage persons is responsible for more than 4,300 deaths and costs $24 billion in the United States.
Underage consumption of alcohol is a serious problem and is why the Social Host Ordinance is essential. It holds persons criminally responsible who host events or gatherings where persons under 21 years of age possess or consume alcohol regardless of whether the persons hosting the event or gathering supplied the alcohol.
Joe Walsh, the Mille Lacs County Attorney, twice brought the Social Host Ordinance in front of the board and on September 18, 2018, the ordinance passed. Walsh is currently seeking re-election for the position of county attorney. Walsh has shown that he is serious about the safety of the youth in the county through his actions both professionally and personally.
For his opponent, Jan Jude, I cannot say the same. On May 27, 2013, a party was held on Jude’s property where underage drinking occurred. A teen who attended the party admitted to consuming large amounts of alcohol before, during and after the party. That same teen was later hospitalized. Jude was the Mille Lacs County Attorney at the time of this incident. I was in the Milaca High School Marching Band when this occurred. Several of the juniors and seniors who attended the party faced punishment, while Jude was investigated, but no charges were filed.
On November 6, each citizen in the county has an important decision to make about who they want as their county attorney. The choice is clear. Vote for Joe Walsh, a candidate who is serious about the safety and well-being of youth in Mille Lacs County.
