While driving along the southwest side of Lake Mille Lacs recently, I was quite surprised to see a large billboard telling us to “Help Sondra Erickson Make Mille Lacs Great Again.” Living in the county for seven years, and working in Onamia, I was under the impression that Mille Lacs was already pretty great. I’m even more perplexed at her statement considering she’s been our state representative since 1998 (save a single two-year term).
If Mille Lacs isn’t great, I’m wondering who Erickson is blaming, and why she thinks we should agree to elect her again if she’s not made things great in the last 20 years.
Additionally, I happened to attend an Aug. 27, 2018 meeting of the Mille Lacs Fishery Advisory Committee, where local resort owners and specialists from the DNR and the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC) met and discussed current lake conditions and ways of increasing value. Erickson also attended, as well as her opponent for District 15A, Emy Minzel.
While there, I saw a member of Erickson’s group question whether the new telemetry research is even worth it, while Minzel spoke with resort owners, individuals with the two fishery management groups, and members of the public who were there to observe.
I guess I believe that we’re already great here, and that people who are willing to look to the future and work with all those with a stake in the lake are better suited to represent us. That is why I’m voting for Emy Minzel on Nov. 6, and I hope you do, too.
