Notebook: Bad weather not likely to stop SSC runners

Rosemount's Avery Leppones (2913) runs at the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 28. The Irish girls and boys teams will compete in the South Suburban Conference championships Friday afternoon at Eagan High School

The forecast for Friday afternoon calls for cool, windy and possibly wet weather, but it would need to be a lot worse than that to keep the South Suburban Conference’s cross country runners from competing.

SSC championships are at stake when the league holds its annual meet at Eagan High School. Racing begins at 3:30 p.m. and begins with the girls varsity meet at 4:05 and the boys varsity meet at 4:35. Both varsity races are 5,000 meters.

Eastview’s boys and Farmington’s girls are defending team champions. The 2018 individual winners have graduated, but a number of top finishers from last year’s conference meet will return.

Eastview (seventh), Prior Lake (ninth) and Eagan (10th) are the top-ranked teams in this year’s South Suburban boys field. Fourth-ranked Farmington is favored to repeat in the girls meet but could be pushed by No. 9 Rosemount.

A.J. Green of Eastview and Gabe Smit of Prior Lake are fourth and fifth in the state Class AA boys individual rankings. Last year Smit was runner-up in the conference meet and Green placed third. Eastview’s Gabriel Mahlen and Sam Morgernstern were top-five finishers at the 2018 conference meet, and Farmington’s Noah Revels placed in the top 10.

Farmington junior Anna Fenske moved to first in the Class AA girls individual rankings this week. She finished third in last year’s conference meet. Other returning top-10 finishers include Lakeville South’s Brianne Brewster (the 2018 runner-up) and Avery Heinz, Rosemount’s Daisy Islas, and Farmington’s Mariah Fenske and Laura McGregor.

North, Eastview hold volleyball tourneys

Several of the state’s top-ranked volleyball teams will be in Dakota County this weekend for tournaments at Lakeville North and Eastview high schools.

Two of the teams in the Todd Bachman Invitational won’t have far to travel, as Lakeville North (ranked fifth in Class 3A) and Lakeville South (seventh) will play in their hometown. Also scheduled to compete are second-ranked Northfield and fourth-ranked East Ridge. Two of the best teams in Class 2A, top-ranked Stewartville and fourth-ranked Marshall, also will come to Lakeville North for the tournament, which starts at 5 p.m. Friday and resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The Eastview Invitational will draw ranked teams from all three of volleyball’s enrollment classes, including Shakopee (No. 6 in Class 3A), Kasson-Mantorville (third in Class 2A), Concordia Academy (fifth in Class 2A), Southwest Christian (sixth in Class 2A) and Minneota (third in Class 1A). Eastview, Rosemount and Shakopee represent the South Suburban Conference when action begins in the Eastview tourney at 5 p.m. Friday. Matches begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
