Local teams win USA Cup soccer titles

Salvo Orange took control early in the USA Cup girls Under-14 Gold Division championship game and went on to defeat Fusion Select of Plymouth 3-0.

Five teams from Salvo Soccer Club reached bracket championship games at the Target USA Cup tournament last week at the National Sports Center in Blaine.

The program, formed by the 2018 merger of REV Soccer Club and Woodbury Soccer Club, had two girls teams win age-group championships in the Gold Division, the top playoff level. Salvo SC Orange went 4-0-1 in girls Under-15 Gold – including a playoff victory over a team from its own club, Salvo SC Steel – and defeated Stjarnan of Iceland 2-1 in the championship game Saturday afternoon.

Salvo Orange also had a Gold Division champion in U14 girls. That team went undefeated in six games, outscoring opponents 19-4. Salvo Orange defeated Plymouth-based Fusion Select 3-0 in the championship game.

Another Salvo Orange team reached the Gold Division final in the U13 age group before falling 1-0 to another Minnesota team, NSSA Academy Storm. Salvo went 5-0-1 in its previous six games.

Salvo SC South Steel was a finalist in the boys U12 11 vs. 11 Gold Division, losing 1-0 to St. Paul Blackhawks Black. The Salvo team won its previous five games by a combined 16-3.

Salvo EVAA Lightning outlasted Southeast Minneapolis Lightning 3-2 in the championship game of the boys U12 9 vs. 9 Bronze Division. That completed a 6-0 run through the tournament for the Salvo team.

This year’s USA Cup had 50 championship games Saturday in age groups ranging from U9 to U19. Lightning delays in the morning caused a delay of more than three hours, but all the games were played.

Salvo, which serves communities including Apple Valley, Rosemount and Farmington, was one of 19 Minnesota clubs to win at least one championship game the USA Cup. Pool play started July 16, leading to Saturday’s championship games.

The USA Cup is the largest youth soccer tournament in the Western Hemisphere, this year drawing 1,152 teams from 22 states and 19 countries. Thirteen Salvo teams played in the weeklong tournament, along with four from BV United (Burnsville/Apple Valley) and three from the Lakeville Soccer Club.

That doesn’t include the teams that came for the USA Cup Weekend tourney, a separate event that took place July 12-14 at the National Sports Center.

Three Salvo girls teams made it to championship games in the USA Cup Weekend tournament, with its Navy team defeated St. Paul Blackhawks Black 2-1 in the U17 final.

The Salvo South Steel U12 team reached the final in the top (Red) division, losing to the Polonia Red Eagles of Wisconsin 3-1. Tokiwagi Gauken High School of Japan defeated Salvo Orange 6-0 in the girls U19 championship game.
