Class AA meet is this weekend at U of M
They’ll all try to unseat Edina at the Class AA girls swimming and diving meet this weekend at the University of Minnesota.
But the Hornets, who won the last three state team championships, figure to be tough to dislodge. They won last year’s title by more than 130 points and all of their first-place finishers in the 2018 meet were sophomores and juniors.
Section 3AA team champion Eagan is among the teams going for a high finish at state, as are Section 1AA runner-up Farmington and Section 3AA third-place squad Eastview. Eagan was seventh in last year’s state meet, the highest finish for a South Suburban Conference team.
Class AA diving preliminaries are 6 p.m. Thursday at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on the U of M campus. Swimming preliminaries are 6 p.m. Friday, with swimming and diving finals at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Farmington has state qualifiers in seven events. Eagan and Eastview each had qualifiers in six events. Athletes from Apple Valley, Burnsville, Lakeville North and Rosemount also will compete at the Class AA meet.
Among the top individual qualifiers is Eastview senior Claudia Dougan, who was third in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races in the 2018 state finals. She won those events in the Section 3AA finals last week in Cottage Grove, setting a section record of 51.35 seconds in the 100 freestyle. Dougan goes into state with the second-fastest seed time in the 100 freestyle and the third-fastest in the 200.
Lakeville North’s Katie Pattee is back at state in the 50 freestyle after finishing fourth in that event last year. Eagan’s Lara Mitchell swept Section 3AA titles in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke and will seek a state medal for the third consecutive year in the backstroke. Rosemount’s Molly Urkiel is a returning state medalist in the 200 individual medley and is seeded sixth in that race this year. Urkiel is the fourth seed in the 100 breaststroke, a race in which her sister Grace also will compete.
