A 16-year-old Apple Valley teen died after an all-terrain vehicle rolled in a field in Crow Wing County, Nov. 25.

Apple Valley residents Tashaud Nelson, 18, and Isabella Brandt, 16, were riding an ATV in a large field west of the Brainerd Airport. They were traveling in a northeast direction in the field when they approached a valley and drainage area in the field. The ATV went airborne, landed at the bottom of the valley and rolled multiple times before coming to rest near the top of the north side of the valley, according to the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office.

Crow Wing deputies were notified of the crash at 3:43 p.m. Brainerd police officers, area first responders and the North Ambulance Service were also dispatched to the scene.

Nelson, the driver of the ATV, was airlifted to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale. A hospital spokesperson said Nelson was in fair condition Monday afternoon. Brandt was pronounced dead at the scene.

Brandt and Nelson were not wearing helmets or other protective riding gear at the time of the crash, the sheriff’s office said.

Brandt, a previous Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School District student, was described in her obituary as a “private person with a huge heart.” She enjoyed spending time at the beach with her friends and “cozy comfy nights with her animals.” She is survived by her mother, Leslie Lerud; father, Troy Brandt; siblings, Dawson Hollund, Jackson Hollund, Colton Lange, Bailee Brandt, Sydnee Brandt, Dominque Garcia; grandparents, Victoria Sparks and Wayne Lerud, and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Nelson is a 2021 Apple Valley High School graduate. He wrestled for Apple Valley and also played defensive tackle for the football team during his time in high school. Updates on his condition are being posted at www.caringbridge.org/visit/tashaudnelson.
