St. Mathias Catholic Church, 23315 Northfield Blvd. in Hampton, will host its first Blue Mass on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the regularly scheduled 5 p.m. Mass.
A Blue Mass is a Mass celebrated annually for first-responders including firefighters, law enforcement officers, and emergency medical services personnel. The color blue relates to the often blue-colored uniforms used by these services. The Mass is an opportunity to show gratitude to first responders and their families, according to a news release.
Both active and retired members of the Randolph-Hampton Volunteer Fire Department are scheduled to be at this year’s Blue Mass. Volunteer firefighters from other neighboring communities are also invited, as well as those serving in law enforcement and medics. At Mass, there will be a special prayer of blessing for those serving as first responders. A Blue Mass is typically celebrated near Sept. 29 and the feast of St. Michael the Archangel as patron saint of first responders.
