To the editor:

As a retired Eagan police officer, I have observed the actions of the City Council over the years. I appreciate the council’s challenges in governing Minnesota’s 11th largest city. Their work is not easy, but we all expect that they will make the right decisions to assure that Eagan remains one of the best places in which to live and work.

Council Member Gary Hansen understands those expectations. He has worked diligently with his fellow council members to make the right choices on behalf of Eagan’s residents and businesses. The result is a thriving local economy, short commuting times, and low property taxes.

I especially appreciate Hansen’s advocacy for public safety. He represents Eagan on the Dakota Communications Center Board, working to assure prompt and responsive police and fire service. He is committed to maintaining effective and reliable public safety and security through properly-staffed and equipped fire and police departments. Recognizing the need for enhanced police and fire protection commensurate with Eagan’s population and business growth, he has supported the hiring of additional police officers and full-time firefighters as well as upgraded police and firefighter facilities.

Hansen is highly respected regionally for providing leadership to support reliable and cost-effective public services. This was highlighted by his election to serve over the past year as president of Metro Cities, a coalition of 90 Twin Cities area communities.

During his tenure on the council, Eagan has been recognized for local government innovation, prudent fiscal management, budget transparency, and citizen engagement. Hansen deserves our support for his hard work and dedication on our behalf. I urge Eagan residents to join me in voting to re-elect Gary Hansen to the City Council.
