To the editor:

It’s disappointing that in reading through multiple newspaper articles, the District 196’s Spotlight newsletter, and the District 196 website, I have yet to see an accounting of the full cost of the proposed levy.

The new levy would increase taxes on the average valued home by $300 per year. Current cost is $391. That’s a 77 percent increase, to a total of $691. Additionally, the new levy would replace the existing 10-year levy, which is in its sixth year. That means effectively extending the current levy by 6 years. The cost for those 6 extra years is not $300 per year but the full $691.

The purpose of this letter is to provide the facts so citizens understand the true cost and can make an informed decision. But don’t take my word for it. Verify it with Mark Stotts, the district’s director of finance.
