A Dakota Hills Middle School seventh-grader in Eagan died Friday, Nov. 1, after a vehicle hit his bicycle.

Eagan police officers were dispatched at 7:20 a.m. to the 1000 block of Diffley Road for a report of a child riding a bike being struck by a vehicle. Arriving officers found Patric Vitek, 13, lying in the road with multiple injuries. He was transported to Regions Hospital where he was pronounced dead, the department said in a news release.

District 196 Director of Communications Tony Taschner said extra counselors are present at the school to do everything they can to support students. Superintendent Mary Kreger sent a message to families of Dakota Hills and Northview Elementary in Eagan, the school Patric previously attended.

“It pains us deeply to inform you of the loss of one of our students,” Kreger wrote.

The department says the driver of the vehicle was headed east on Diffley Road and traveling in the center lane when the vehicle struck the rear tire of the bicycle.

Diffley Road has two through lanes in both directions, and Police Chief Roger New said it is not a controlled intersection at this location.

The driver remained on the scene after the incident.

New said there were a number of vehicles in the area at the time of collision and several witnesses.

The incident remains under investigation by Eagan police with assistance from the Minnesota State Patrol.
