Is on administrative leave from teaching position, pending investigation

Tyler Krebs has resigned as Lakeville South High School head football coach and is on administrative leave from his teaching position pending an investigation, the Lakeville Area School District confirmed Monday.

Superintendent Michael Baumann notified parents and staff members via email Monday afternoon that Krebs had been placed on administrative leave. A copy of the message was provided to Sun Thisweek Newspapers. The message offered no other details about the investigation, other than that Krebs resigned from his coaching position effective Monday.

Attempts by the newspaper to reach Krebs were unsuccessful.

Published media reports Tuesday said the Apple Valley police have an active criminal investigation involving Krebs relating to unauthorized computer access. A redacted incident report the department provided to Sun Thisweek Newspapers says a “suspected breach/unauthorized computer access” was reported at Eastview High School on Sept. 20, but Krebs was not listed in it. Apple Valley Police Capt. Nick Francis declined further comment because of the active investigation.

District 196 Director of Communications Tony Taschner said Tuesday that the district is cooperating with an Apple Valley police investigation involving Eastview, but couldn’t comment further.

Krebs is a former teacher and coach at Eastview. He was assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the football team before leaving in 2011 to become head coach at Burnsville High School.

He now is an English language arts and business education teacher at Lakeville South High School. Krebs also is an assistant boys track and field coach and worked with South's Olympic weightlifting program.

Ben Burk, the Lakeville South football team's offensive coordinator, will be interim head coach.

Krebs came to Lakeville South in 2017 following the retirement of Larry Thompson, who had been head football coach at South since the school opened in 2005. Krebs was 12-13 in two-plus seasons as the Cougars' head coach. In 2018, Lakeville South went on a five-game winning streak that carried the team to the state Class 6A semifinals.

Lakeville South is 3-1 this season following a 14-7 victory over Eastview on Friday. Krebs was not on the South sideline for the Eastview game.

Before going to Lakeville South, Krebs was head coach for six seasons at Burnsville. His overall record with the Blaze was 27-30, but the team was 16-5 in his final two seasons. Burnsville reached the Class 6A quarterfinals in 2015. Krebs coached in the Eastview program for 14 years before going to Burnsville, where he was a video and multimedia specialist in addition to coaching.

He is a 1992 graduate of Lakeville High School and played for the Panthers' football team coached by Thompson. He was part of the Lakeville team that played in the 1991 Prep Bowl.
