MD Concrete, a decorative concrete company that serves the south and east metro, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

Owners Matt Longawa and Mike Dodson say the secret to their success has been sustainable growth, assuring complete oversite on all projects. The pair carry out every phase of the projects themselves – sales, setup, forming, pouring concrete and finishing – to maintain quality control and ensure customer satisfaction.

“I want people to enjoy their outdoor spaces with premium concrete finishings that will last for decades,” Longawa said. “I realized that, for MD Concrete to be successful, Mike and I would have to stay within our communities to ensure that the best possible craftsmanship is produced.”

According to Dodson, every project is treated as if it’s his own home, making sure that every customer gets the best-handcrafted concrete finish. He said he knows memories are going to be made in these spaces and that’s why both he and Longawa are adamant in staying small as it gives them control over quality.

Longawa and Dodson have collectively worked in the industry for more than 50 years, beginning in their college years. The men opted to take a leap of faith as entrepreneurs when they realized they were spending more time on their side job than their full-time jobs.

Since its start, MD Concrete has grown to 10 employees, five rigs and operates in the south and east metro regions. The company provides an array of services such as decorative and standard concrete driveways, patios, aprons, fire pits, athletic courts and more.

MD Concrete has won the Sun Thisweek’s Reader Choice Award five times, most recently in 2017 and 2018.

Both Longawa and Dodson are active members in the south and east metro communities, having served on the Apple Valley, Lakeville and Hastings Chamber of Commerce. According to a news release, they’ve also helped several area needy families make repairs to their homes. They also take part in spring home and garden shows, are highly involved with their church and volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program.
