From June 13 to 15, Heartbeat Performing Arts Center’s students and teachers transported their audiences to a mystical dimension when they presented “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” at Eastview High School in Apple Valley.

Two variations were presented: A “junior” show featuring cast members ranging in age from 3 years to middle school, and a “senior” show featuring cast members ranging in age from middle school to adult. Dancers, actors and choirs from Heartbeat worked for the past several months to honor the special permission they received from Warner Bros. Entertainment and J.K. Rowling, who were not responsible for the event which was not an official or endorsed activity.

Deborah Lysholm, CEO, and Kristin Freya, artistic director at Heartbeat, emphasized the educational aspects to their students of presenting a beloved story in musical theater form. Lysholm and Freya, with the help of Lysholm’s brother, Butch Lysholm, spent many weeks designing, constructing, painting and assembling every set design piece and prop.
