On Thursday, May 16, the Apple Valley Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Network members and supporters held their 35th monthly Military Appreciation Dinner. Over 95 active military, veterans, spouses and family members attended the chicken dinner at the Apple Valley American Legion Post 1776.

Guest speaker was Apple Valley resident Gary Shade, the Legion Post’s historian who served in the U.S. Air Force.

Shade, who owns the firearms training company Shade’s Landing Inc., shared some life lessons and how he tries to apply them to his life. He pointed out the importance of the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Network to serve veterans alongside the Apple Valley American Legion Post 1776. What he considered one of the most important life lessons was: “Life is short, so kiss or hug longer, laugh harder, love deeply and smile sweetly.”

Sponsor for the dinner, which is free to the guests, was Dick’s Valley Service, Apple Valley, and owners Jeff and Lori Tuthill. The attended the dinner with their children Kayla, Andrew and Allyson.

During the month of May the Apple Valley Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Network participated in events at the Apple Valley and Eastview high schools to honor graduates who are entering military service. Members presented each of those graduates with a gift package and expressed the honor those young men and women deserve for choosing to serve our country.

Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Network is also partnering with the city of Apple Valley in celebrating the city’s 50th anniversary, along with participating in the Freedom Days Parade on July 4.

President Paul Chellsen said the network can do more to develop programs to meet the needs of veterans, active service members and their families. Those who would like to help or have questions can contact Paul at paulchellsen@icloud.com.
