Compass, a career studies program at Wayzata High School, seeks professionals to volunteer their time as a mentor, guest instructor or business partner.

Compass offers a team-taught environment where students learn from two high school teachers and guest instructors from the business community. Each student is assigned a mentor and also works in teams to produce deliverables for area businesses.

Compass programs offered this coming school year are graphic communications, cybersecurity, and business management and economics.

The program is especially in need of professionals for its fall program in graphic communications. Some related career areas are corporate communications, creative/art designer, entrepreneurship, graphic design, illustrator, layout artist/prepress technician, marketing, multimedia (web) designer, printing and packaging and photo editor/Photoshop artist.

Mentors provide support to students as they learn about the workplace. Requirements include weekly e-mails, monthly face-to-face meetings and attending two or three events hosted by Wayzata Public Schools.

Business partners provide projects for student groups. Requirements: A contact person to direct our student team, initial meeting to develop project charter and participation in final presentation by Compass students.

Guest instructors help deliver relevant curriculum to students. Requirements: Work with instructors on topic selection and present to students during class time.
