Armstrong senior Nicole Snezhko, pictured in a match against Maple Grove sophomore Zoe Adkins on Sept. 26, won both of her matches at No. 1 singles in the 5AA team section against Monticello and St. Michael-Albertville. Snezhko is looking to defend her 5AA individual section title and make state for the third time in her high school career Oct. 14-15.

Fifth-seeded Robbinsdale Armstrong girls tennis finished as the 5AA section runner-up last season, and the Falcons, despite only returning two starters from that team, fell just one win shy of making the 5AA semifinals last week.

Armstrong (16-5 overall) defeated 12th-seeded Monticello 5-2 Oct. 3 but fell 4-3 at fourth-seeded St. Michael-Albertville in the quarterfinals.

The season is far from over, however, as senior Nicole Snezhko is the defending 5AA individual section champion and is ranked fifth overall in Class 2A. Snezhko (20-1 overall) is looking to make state for the third time in her high school career.

Maple Grove sophomore Zoe Adkins, who Snezhko beat in the section final last year, is ranked third. Adkins won a close three-set match against Snezhko in a dual meet on Sept. 26, and the two are expected to be seeded first and second this season.

The individual 5AA section tournament is Oct. 14-15 at Reed Sweatt Tennis Center.

Also expected to compete at individual sections is No. 2 singles player, junior Sofie Ravn (20-2). The top two doubles team will most likely compete, as well, but there may be a few mix ups with lineups.

Armstrong 5, Monticello 2

The Falcons swept the singles matches and also won at No. 1 doubles in the win over Monticello on Oct. 3.

Snezhko defeated junior Hannah Mayer 6-0, 6-1, and Ravn added a 6-2, 6-1 win over senior Alyna Jones at No. 1 and 2 singles.

Senior Renae Brunner won 6-0, 6-0 over seventh grader Rebecca Rousslang, and eighth grader Peyton Erickson defeated sophomore Samantha Pullen 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 and 4 singles.

Senior Kayla Marek and seventh grader Anna Rausch added a 6-3, 6-4 win over senior Maddie Bjellos and junior Jewel Zimmerman-Gilman.

STMA 4, Armstrong 3

Snezhko added a 6-1, 6-3 win over junior Emma Thole at STMA on Oct. 4, and Ravn also won 6-4, 6-2 over junior Meadow LaDuke.

The other win was Erickson’s 7-6, 4-6, 10-3 win over sophomore Hailey Peterson at No. 4 singles.

Junior Bryn Anderson and seventh grader Jenna Schnell were the next closest to get a win at No. 3 doubles. They fell 6-7, 6-7 in two tiebreakers against senior Emma Cordell and junior Rachel Solberg.

STMA takes on top-seeded Wayzata on Thursday, Oct. 10, at Baseline Tennis Center
