Park Center freshman Laubenra Ben couldn’t beat her personal best June 7-8 at the AA state track and field championships at Hamline University in St. Paul, but she did bring home her first career state medal.
Ben started state in the 200-meter dash prelims on June 7, and she took second in her heat in 25.35 seconds to qualify for the final. She ended up with the fifth-best time in the prelims.
Ben was a little faster on June 8 in the 200 final. She reached the finish line in 25.01 and ended up fourth overall. If she had reached her personal best of 24.72, Ben could have finished as high as runner-up.
Minneapolis North junior Shaliciah Jones won the state title in the 200 in 24.44.
Ben also made state in 2018 with the 4x200 relay, which took 15th out of 16 teams.
She is expected back next season and can try to advance to state for the third straight year.
