The Brooklyn Park Police Department, in partnership with the recreation and parks department and operations and maintenance departments, will install an aerator in the sunfish pond at the Community Activity Center, 5600 85th Ave. N.

The fishery at the pond has struggled through hard winters. The aerator will force dissolved oxygen into the pond, improving water quality, reducing algae, and enhancing fish habitat. The city has also put a management plan in place to control run-off, manage aquatic weeds, and ensure a sustainable fishery.

An aerator can also lead to thin ice, so the city will place signage around the aeration area to advise residents.

The Brooklyn Park Police Department has used fishing as a way to connect with at-risk youth for more than a decade, and has used the sunfish pond since it was constructed in 2012.

The police department has also partnered with the Special Olympics of Minnesota for one-on-one fishing experiences.
