The Waconia Lions Club launched their Carver County Korean & Vietnam Memorial Trip Project in August at the Carver County Fair. The project will involve sending 135 Korean & Vietnam veterans from Carver County to Washington, D.C., to visit their respective memorials on April 28, 2018. The entire trip, which will be provided at no cost to veterans, includes ground and air transportation, tours of veterans’ memorials and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery, three meals and snacks, special programs in both Washington and Waconia, medical support staff, and gifts.

Since the initial launch of the project in August, the Waconia Lions have been working diligently to finalize the arrangements, seek out Korean & Vietnam Veterans to apply for the trip, and raise the necessary funds to make the event a reality. As of Oct. 26, the club has made significant progress toward its goal.

Thus far the club has received 87 veteran applications for the trip! With a project goal of 135 veterans, the club has almost 65 percent of the applicants needed to have a full roster.

Of the $83,000 required to fully fund the trip for veterans, the club has received and deposited approximately $28,900 in donations. This means that the club has raised approximately 35 percent of the funds needed over the last three months!

The Waconia Lions would like to sincerely thank everyone who has donated to the project so far. In addition, the club would like to recognize those who have helped sponsor the project with a donation of $500 or more:

• Norwood-Young America VFW Post 1783

• Waconia Area Edward Jones

• Crown Aviation (David Crown)

• Waconia Wrestling Boosters

• Waconia Brewing Company

• Fred & Phyllis Radde

• The Community Foundation for Carver County

• Waconia Lions Club

With just over 5 months to go, the Waconia Lions Club still has a great deal to accomplish and they need your help to make it a reality! If you are a Korean or Vietnam veteran, please consider applying for this trip. If you want to help support the project, please consider making a donation!
