The Waconia football team controlled large portions of the season opener Sept. 1 but found themselves dropping the Thursday matchup with Robbinsdale Armstrong 35-14. The Wildcats held the ball for most of the opening quarter thanks to a long drive that went down to the goalline and later scored back-to-back touchdowns to start the second half, yet big plays in the passing game by the Falcons doomed the ‘Cats.

Robbinsdale Armstrong jumped out to a 21-0 lead at the break before the ‘Cats stormed back to make it a game in the second half. Big plays on defense and special teams set up the Waconia offense in good field position for the first two drives of the second half, leading to a pair of rushing touchdowns by Max McEnelly to bring the Wildcats within one score (21-14).
