For the third time in 4 years, the Waconia girls soccer team is heading to the section championship, following a 5-0 win over New Ulm Tuesday night.
The Wildcats left little doubt as to who would move on in the Section 2A semifinal game, nearly leading from whistle to whistle. A series of attacking opportunities in the opening seconds could not be cleared by the Eagles, with a deflected shot off a defender going past the keeper to give Waconia a 1-0 lead in the opening moments.
While the 'Cats would continue to control possession and tally the scoring opportunities, including a deep lofted shot from Chanda Breeggemann that bounced off the back post, the Wildcats did not earn another goal until late in the half. Bryn Theis executed her front-flip throw-in perfectly, finding Chloe Jaeger in the middle of box for a header goal to put Waconia up 2-0.
The Wildcats closed out the game with three more goals in the second frame to move on to the Section 2A Championship game. Jaeger's two goals and one assist led the 'Cats and Theis tallied three assists and a goal of her own. Breeggemann added a goal and an assist, while Melissa Honnold had the remaining goal.
No. 4 seed Waconia takes on No. 3 Fairmont Oct. 17 in New Prague, after the Cardinals defeated No. 2 St. Peter 2-0 in the other semifinal game. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., with the winner moving on to the Class A State Tournament.
