Waconia FC is finding its footing as the season heads into the final month, having more than doubled their points in recent weeks. After compiling only 7 points over the first two months of the season, Waconia earned eight points in July, winning twice and tying twice in six games.
In the third month of play, Waconia FC scored in all six games and tallied two clean sheets. In the last week of July, Waconia is unbeaten, having defeated FC Minnesota B 1-0 July 21 and the Inferno Rebels July 18, sandwiching a 1-1 tie with Stegman’s Athletic July 23.
Hosting Stegman’s Athletic last Tuesday at Crown College, Waconia FC fell behind early before knotting the score at 1-1. Stegman’s was aggressive early and earned the first score before Waconia settled in and kept control for much of the remainder of the first half.
Waconia took advantage of a free kick from just inside their opponent’s half midway through the first. The kick was played toward the box and a flick on had two Waconia players racing to the ball while the keeper dove for the loose ball. Waconia won the battle and put the chance in the back of the net, knotting the score at 1-1.
While the first half was relatively clean with only two fouls per side, the second half slowed down a bit with more fouls and tougher defense. Waconia could not manage many chances inside, though several shots from distance came close to getting on frame. The game would end in a 1-1 tie.
On Sunday, Waconia FC bounced back with a 2-0 win over the Inferno Rebels.
Waconia ends the season with three home games out of five matches remaining.
