A St. Paul man is dead following a six-car crash on Highway 41 on Tuesday evening, according to authorities.
According to the Carver County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a driving complaint related to a 2008 BMW 335I on Hwy. 212 near the the intersection of Co. Rd. 51. According to the sheriff’s office, the complainant reported the eastbound BMW was crossing center and fog lines, weaving and driving at fluctuating speeds.
Deputies located the vehicle on Hwy. 212, near the intersection of Co. Rd. 53 in Cologne, according to the sheriff’s office. The sheriff’s office reported that the BMW fled when the deputy attempted to stop the motorist. The sheriff’s office reports that the BMW – driven by 40-year-old James Charles Erickson of St. Paul – continued eastbound on Hwy. 212 at a high rate of speed.
Deputies reported that the BMW exited Hwy. 212 onto Hwy. 41, where the vehicle was involved in a multi-vehicle collision with a 2011 Jeep Wrangler, 2012 Honda Odyssey, 2004 Infiniti G35, a 2005 Lexus RX330 and a 2017 Ford Expedition.
According to the state patrol, Erickson was killed in the crash and pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of the other vehicles suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to the state patrol. The sheriff’s office reports other motorists involved in the crash were transported to area hospitals.
Alcohol is not thought to be a factor in the crash, according to the state patrol. The state patrol also noted that Erickson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The incident remains under investigation.
