Join the Carver County Historical Society in welcoming local syndicated political cartoonist Dave Granlund to its 78th annual meeting on Sunday, Jan. 28. The general meeting of members will be held at 1 p.m. Granlund will begin his presentation at 1:30 at the Historical Society & Museum, 555 West First St., Waconia, and the public is invited.
In demand as a guest speaker, Granlund mixes history, current events and humor while sketching cartoons and caricatures before school and civic groups.
Dave Granlund’s cartoons have been published in daily newspapers since 1977 and in weekly papers as far back as the 1960s. Fresh out of the U.S. Air Force in 1977, Granlund was hired as a political cartoonist for the South Middlesex News in Framingham, Mass. He was soon syndicated in 1978 with NEA-United Media, published in over 700 newspapers nationally, and later internationally through politicalcartoons.com.
His work has appeared in the likes of the New York Times, USA Today, Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor, and magazines such as Newsweek. His work has also been shown on national television and some of his sports cartoons are in the Baseball Hall of Fame and Basketball Hall of Fame.
Granlund’s newspaper honors include awards from: UPI, New England Press Association, International Association of Business Communicators, Bronze Quill Award IABC; Associated Press, Massachusetts Press Association and New England Press Award. His work has been entered numerous times for the Pulitzer Prize.
Happily married 44 years, Granlund is a proud father and grandfather. His other interests include science, history, wood carving, kayaking, biking, antique tractors and Swedish language studies.
