It was a big week for “Big Black” last week as the Waconia Marching Band captured almost all awards in band competitions in Litchfield and Milaca, Minn.
At Litchfield’s first ever “Parade of Bands” festival last Tuesday, Waconia took grand champion and the “people’s choice” award, plus caption awards for best drum line and best drum majors. On Thursday, at the Gateway to the North festival in Milaca, Waconia was grand champion again and took the same caption awards, plus an award for best color guard in its class.
This past Saturday, Waconia marched at a non-judged community festival in Glencoe, hometown to band director John Pohland, before traveling to Roseville’s “Rose Parade” on Monday evening.
This Sunday, the marching band season culminates in Alexandria with the Vikingland Band Festival, billed as Minnesota’s biggest summer marching band competition, featuring 21 marching bands and 1,700 performers.
