Waconia Relay for Life celebrated its 10th anniversary at the Carver County Fairgrounds on Friday, Aug. 16. With 18 teams and over cancer 50 survivors in attendance, participants raised over $40,000!
The survivors and their families were treated to a chicken dinner served by the Waconia High School National Honor Society students. Opening ceremony was led by emcees Dianne Breyer and Doug Sayles, and included an inspiring Invocation by Pastor Leroy LaPlant, a past Honorary Survivor. 2019 Honorary Survivor Ruth Koch shared her amazing story of how she fought back and beat her cancer diagnosis.
A silent auction gave many an opportunity to donate by bidding on many great items that were generously donated by the community. During our Luminaria Ceremony participants honored the life of Chloe Fruth who is no longer with us, but left a legacy that will continue to fight against cancer, especially in children” said We were then led around the track in a silent memory lap by bagpiper Larry Peitersen.
Entertainment for the evening included performances by the WHS Drumline, singers Anni Maurer and Bonnie Young, Waconia Lakettes, School of Rock of Eden Prairie, Lakeside Sound and Light, Zumba with Marcela Pennington, DJ Mike Norrbom, and Laketown Gymnastics.
The 2019 Leadership Team would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has helped make Relay for Life of Waconia a success for the past 10 years. Thank you to our sponsors, our event leadership team, the relay teams, survivors, caregivers, emcees, performers, participants, and anyone else who has attended and donated in some way. We could not have raised over $940,000 over the past 10 years without your help! Special thanks to the WHS sports teams, NHS, drum line and art department. We truly could not accomplish what we do to make this Relay possible without your many hands, energy, and willingness to help.”
