Jagger Kiser drove in two runs and scored twice as Columbia Heights downed Liberty Classical Academy 5-0 April 9.
The Hylanders junior third baseman went 1-2 at the plate, stole a base and got walked once. Junior infielder Connor Hogg also drove in a run and reached home. He went 1-3 at the plate and stole two bases.
Hylanders junior infielder Josh Deel and freshman first baseman drove in a run apiece. Deel’s came on a sack fly. Junior infielder Isaac Becker and senior infielder Aiden Smertneck scored a run apiece. Becker also stole a base.
Smertneck pitched an inning and struck out two batters. Junior pitcher Aaron Severson earned the win with 11 strikeouts in six innings of pitching. He also walked five batters.
Columbia Heights didn’t play again through Monday when it had its second game in five days postponed. The Hylanders had games with Minneapolis Edison Wednesday and New Life Academy Thursday scheduled after press deadlines. The Hylanders open Tri-Metro Conference play April 22 against St. Anthony Village at 4:30 p.m.
Eagles start 2-0
Totino-Grace opened its baseball season with a pair of wins through April 9. The Eagles beat Jordan 8-3 April 5 at the Mini Met and then beat Blaine 6-4 April 9 at home.
Eagles senior outfielder Jared Eibensteiner drove in two runs on two hits against Jordan. Eagles senior infielder Quinn Germann and senior outfielder Steven Hand drove in a run apiece. Senior pitcher Chad Fox and junior pitcher Alexander Stephens each had four strikeouts.
Against Blaine, the Eagles held off a seventh-inning rally by the Bengals. Totino-Grace established a 6-1 lead through three innings before that.
Eagles senior pitcher Christian Morel fanned six batters in four innings on the mound. He also shined at the plate with five RBIs.
Knights baseball beats Panthers
Irondale avoided a 0-2 start to its baseball season by beating Spring Lake Park 7-0 April 9.
Knights junior infielder Nate Foley went 1-4 with two RBI and a run scored to spark his team. Senior infielder Joe Super also stepped up with 2-3 batting, a RBI and two runs scored.
Senior outfielder Nolan Newberg had a RBI and run scored for the Knights, and Carter Jorgensen drove in a run. Senior infielders Aden Price and Tommy Kunza scored a run apiece. Carson Schicker, a senior outfielder, also scored a run.
Knights sophomore pitcher Jack Zupfer earned the win with three strikeouts and one hit allowed in five innings of work. Foley also pitched two innings and had two strikeouts.
Irondale (1-2) lost its opener 7-3 against Stillwater April 8. Newberg went 2-2 at the plate for the Knights and scored a run and drove in another. Jorgensen scored a run on 1-2 hitting. Senior outfielder Colin Ward also scored a run. Junior outfielder Nick Haugen had a RBI. Jorgensen took the loss pitching with six runs allowed in three innings.
The Knights fell to 1-2 Monday with a 1-0 loss against South St. Paul. The Packers won with a run scored in the seventh inning. Foley took the loss pitching despite fanning six batters in four innings.
