Richfield Bloomington Credit Union has been recognized for its leadership and support of the Flags for Fort Snelling program.
The credit union received a 2018 Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award. The award, sponsored by the Minnesota Credit Union Network and the Credit Union National Association, recognizes credit unions for the activities they organize that benefit their community or a specific charity.
The Flags for Fort Snelling program honored all 200,000 veterans buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery by placing U.S. flags at each headstone for Memorial Day, restoring a tradition that had ended 35 years ago. More than $340,000 was raised to purchase the flags and cover related expenses. Approximately 8,000 volunteers placed the flags at the cemetery on the Saturday prior to Memorial Day.
“Now that this great tradition has been restored, RBCU hopes even more Minnesotans will get involved and help to make sure it continues forever,” said RBCU President Greg Worthen.
RBCU’s winning entry will advance to the national competition, where it will compete with community service projects from credit unions across the country.
