A group of Edina students will again participate in the FIRST Tech Challenge World Robotics Championship.

Team 3763 “Piece of Cake” is made up of five eighth-graders from South View Middle School – Alec Becker, Narendra Ghate, JJ Irons, William O’Connell and Alex Wicklund – and two freshmen from Edina High School: Teddy Cunio and Jack Zentner.

The FIRST Tech Challenge season is filled with competitions, both locally and regionally, where teams battle for a spot in the FIRST Championship, along with the hopes of earning other awards.

“Piece of Cake” won the state championship, which took place on Feb. 9, and will advance for the second year in a row to the FTC World Robotics Championship April 24-28 in Detroit.

Competing at the state level with 48 teams, “Piece of Cake” was part of a winning alliance of three teams that included a team from Apple Valley and one from Brooklyn Center. Other Edina FIRST Tech Challenge teams that competed at the state tournament competition were team 2887 “Bucket Brigade,” team 14661 “Java the Hutt,” and team 15225 “Nerd Herd.” There were 11 “small robot” FTC Teams in Edina this year, in addition to the “big robot” team, “The Green Machine.”

Ten Minnesota teams are advancing to the World Tournament where they will compete with students from more than a dozen countries.
