After both Excelsior and Edina won their first games in the American Legion Baseball Central Plains Regional on Wednesday, the west suburban rivals went head to head for the fourth time this year on Thursday.

The top of Excelsior’s batting order had a big night as the Fire Club made it four straight over Edina with a 7-0 shutout. Jarod Wandersee, Jack Hanson and Will Sturek, the top three hitters in Excelsior’s order, each had two hits, while Wandersee and Hanson, the shortstop and second baseman, each had three RBIs. Excelsior’s winning pitcher Garrett Synstelien was dominant, allowing five hits and striking out four over seven innings. The Fire Club beat one of Edina’s top pitchers, righthander Drew Bishop.

In first-round regional games, played in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Edina beat Sioux Falls 9-8 on Andrew Enck’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Excelsior outlasted Fargo, North Dakota 17-11 with Hanson supplying four hits. Reliever Aaron Wukmir was the winning pitcher.
