Stack Ice, Lake Superior

One morning I watched in awe as this ice piled up before my eyes. A single photo cannot capture the experience, but the results are impressive to behold. At Artists Point, Grand Marais, MN

For the second year, a Stillwater arts nonprofit will host a fundraiser that showcases local artists’ ingenuity and talent.

ArtReach St. Croix will host their annual fundraiser “One Square Foot” from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, June 13 at the Grand Banquet Hall, located at 301 South Second St. in Stillwater.

One Square Foot is a juried exhibition and auction of about 40 pieces of artwork on a twelve-inch scale by St. Croix Valley artists. The event also features live music by Marine on St. Croix’s Kyle Tennis and the Riverside Quartet.

ArtReach, located at 224 N. Fourth St. in Stillwater, is an art organization and gallery that sponsors community arts events in the St. Croix Valley.

This is ArtReach’s second year hosting One Square Foot building off the bird house auction, an annual fundraiser the organization ran for four years, said ArtReach Executive Director Heather Rutledge.

“It was a shift and twist on the first artist challenge,” Rutledge said. “The format works really well as far as creating limitations that the artist can really push the boundaries on.”

Thanks to generous community sponsors who covered the event expenses, funds raised at One Square Foot directly support ArtReach’s regional programs and artist services such as exhibitions, the website St. Croix Splash, network building and community collaborations, Rutledge said. This also includes ArtReach’s literary events such as the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read and the fall arts series, “Take me to the River.”

Rutledge added One Square Foot is an opportunity for ArtReach to showcase local talent and for community members to discover their new favorite local artist.

“People who come to the auction can take a little treasure home,” Rutledge said.

Tickets are $40 general admission and include an appetizer and dessert buffet. There will also be a cash bar as well as a wine pull at $20 per ticket. Guests will also have the opportunity to purchase locally-made ceramic vases with unique floral arrangements, donated by River Valley Potters and Arcola Flower Farm.

Purchase tickets online at or by phone at 651-439-1465.
