This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.
Football — Jesse George rushes for 167 yards on 26 carries, including a 54-yard touchdown scamper late in the fourth quarter to help send the fifth-ranked Stillwater football team to a 24-14 Suburban East Conference victory over Woodbury. On the other side of the ball, Andrew Rose records 14 solo tackles, including five for a loss, and finishes with 49 defensive points to break the team’s previous single-game record of 43 set by Nick Wohlers in 1987.
Volleyball — Emily McDonough notches seven of her team-high 23 kills in the deciding fifth game as the Stillwater volleyball team holds off the Rangers 3-2 in a battle of SEC unbeatens at Forest Lake. Kayla Zeno provides 14 kills and 40 set assists for the seventh-ranked Ponies.
Baseball — Stillwater 14-year-old Matthew Dillner and a few lucky friends from his Lake Elmo traveling baseball team enjoy a private practice session with Minnesota Twins closer Joe Nathan after winning a “Throw with Joe” drawing as part of the Kemps Select Milk sweepstakes.
