ROCHESTER — Competing in a field that included 8 of the top 11 ranked teams in Class AAA and 6 of the 8 highest ranked teams in Class AA, the unranked Stillwater wrestling team finished ninth in the 40-team Minnesota Christmas Tournament on Dec. 14-15 at the Rochester University Center.

Class AA powers Simley (204.5) and Kasson-Mantorville (199.5) occupied the top two spots in the team standings, followed by Shakopee, which is ranked No. 1 in Class AAA in third place with 176 points. The Ponies totaled 131 points.

Stillwater finished with five placewinners, led by runner-up Reid Ballantyne at 126 pounds. Ballantyne recorded his 100th career victory in the tournament, but also suffered just the second loss of his varsity career after falling to Jake Svihel of Totino-Grace 5-2 in the finals at 126 pounds. Svihel, a three-time individual state runner-up also defeated Ballantyne by two points in the finals at this tournament a year ago.

A two-time individual state champion, Ballantyne’s career record stands at 102-2.

The Ponies received fifth-place finishes from Kieler Carlson (132 pounds), Trey Kruse (138) and Will Gleason (195) and a sixth-place showing from Josh Piechowski at 182 pounds.

After losing his first match after an opening-round bye, Carlson had a busy weekend with eight matches in two days — thought he prevailed by injury default in the fifth-place match.

Kruse edged Luke Peterson of Farmington 5-3 in the fifth-place match while Will Gleason defeated Owatonna’s Nick Staska 2-1 in overtime in the fifth-place match to finish the tournament with a 5-2 record.

Piechowski was stopped by Simley’s Quayin Short 6-0 in the fifth-place match to finish with a 4-2 record.

The Ponies (1-0 SEC, 4-0) were scheduled to face ninth-ranked Mounds View in a key Suburban East Conference dual on Dec. 20. The winner will also have the inside track on the top seed in Section 4AAA. Stillwater will also compete in the La Crosse Bi-State Classic on Dec. 28-29.

• Ballantyne became the 15th Stillwater wrestler to win 100 or more matches in a career. The other members of the 100-victory club are Dustin Dahlblom, Trey Kruse, Steve Dahlblom, Joey Gould, Austin Jordan, Cody Madsen, Mike Wright, Alex Cadwell, Branden Madsen, Chris Anderson, Will Harter, Karl Knothe, Ray Wilhelm and Sean Cusick.
