Community members, businesses and organizations across the St. Croix Valley will honor America’s fallen military service members, prisoners of war and those missing in action on Memorial Day, May 27.

Between opportunities to consume local art and get outside, Memorial Day weekend along the St. Croix River is also the perfect start to summer. Below, the Gazette compiled a list of area events for the long weekend.

Friday, May 24

William O’Brien State Park, Marine on St. Croix

The ArtReach St. Croix Mobile Art Gallery will host a pop-up exhibition near Lake Alice at William O’Brien State Park Friday, May 24 to Sunday, May 26.

The exhibition will feature art inspired by the St. Croix River by: Andrea Leila Denecke, Deanna Grigus, Alan Honn, Marty Harris and Michael Slagle. Their work includes ceramics, photography, glass, printmaking and paintings.

The exhibition is free with a park vehicle permit. Day permits are $7 and annual permits are $35.

Saturday, May 25

Pioneer Park, Stillwater

Run Stillwater will hold the Stillwater half marathon, 10K and 5K starting at 8 a.m. at Pioneer Park, located at Laurel and North Second Streets. Runners race along the scenic Gateway Trail and through the streets of Stillwater, with a shared finish line at Pioneer Park. To register, visit

Race packet pick-up if Friday, May 24 from 3-8 p.m. or 6 a.m. on race day at the Water Street Inn, 101 Water St. S. in Stillwater.

The Big Pink House, Stillwater

Stillwater poet Freya Manfred and Minnesota poet laureate Joyce Sutphen, of Chaska, Minn., will read from their books of poetry 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at Big Pink, a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired home located at 1900 N. Second St. in Stillwater.

Admission is by donation and space is limited. Big Pink is not wheelchair accessible. There will be refreshments as well as books available for selling and signing.

Sunday, May 26

Gammelgården Museum, Scandia

The Gammelgården Museum will hold “Immigrant for a day,” a free opportunity to experience life as an immigrant making a new life on the small 1800s farm, located at 20880 Olinda Trail in Scandia.

All five historic, fully-furnished buildings are open to the public from 1-4 p.m. Dressing in period costume is encouraged.

Monday, May 27, Memorial Day

Bayport American Legion

The Bayport American Legion Post 491 will host their annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony starting at 8:30 a.m. Starting at 8 a.m., the Bayport Auxiliary will sell breakfast sandwiches until they’re gone for $3. The club will also serve hot dogs at 11 a.m.

Evergreen Community Cemetery, Afton

The Evergreen Community Cemetery Association will hold a Memorial Day service at 11:15 a.m. at the cemetery, located west of Memorial Lutheran Church on County Road 18 in Afton. The program will include the Hudson VFW Post 2115 Honor Guard. Lieutenant Colonel William VandenBergh will speak and the Boy Scouts will give a reading.

Stillwater Veterans Memorial

The annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Veterans Memorial of Stillwater, located at 138 Pine St. West, will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, May 27.

The ceremony honors St. Croix Valley area war casualties with a wreath laying ceremony as well as music from the Stillwater Area High School (SAHS) Wind Symphony and the Croix Chordsmen. A T-6 Thunder Flight Team will also conduct a flyover.

Chaplain John Morris, who has been an active member in the military since 1984, will give the keynote address. SAHS senior Holton King will also receive the inaugural Stillwater Veterans Memorial Military Service Scholarship.

Stillwater Veterans Memorial of Foreign Wars (VFW)

The Honor Guard and Auxiliary of Stillwater’s VFW Post 323 visits local cemeteries annually on Memorial Day. The schedule is as follows: Rutherford Cemetery, 7 a.m.; St. Mathews Cemetery, 7:30 a.m.; Withrow Cemetery, 7:50 a.m.; Houlton (Wis.) Cemetery, 8:30 a.m.; Fairview Cemetery, 9 a.m.; Salem Cemetery, 9:20 a.m. and VFW Post Home, located at 5880 Omaha Ave. North in Stillwater, at 9:45 a.m.
