Stillwater native Alex Beach played a key role in the U.S. Team’s 14-12 comeback victory over Great Britain and Ireland in the 29th PGA Cup on Sunday, Sept. 29 at Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa in Austin, Texas.
The PGA Cup is modeled after the Ryder Cup, with men’s club professionals competing for the Llandudno Trophy.
Beach, who earned a spot on the 10-member team following his victory in the PGA Professional Championship in the spring, finished with a 2-2 record in four matches during the competition.
The Americans own an 18-7-4 record overall in this event, but needed a furious rally in the singles matches on the final day to regain the Cup after the GB&I Team captured the last two.
GB&I won seven of eight points on Day 2 to build a 10-6 lead going into the event’s final day of competition. But the Americans responded with victories in 8 of 10 singles matches, including a 1-up victory for Beach over Alex Wrigley.
Beach trailed in his match before making par to win the 17th hole and square the match. He also finished strong while draining a 10-footer for birdie after a difficult pitch from a side-hill lie on the par-5 18th hole.
Beach played with Mill River Club pro Jason Caron in two foursomes matches and one four-ball match. The duo lost to Wrigley and Matthew Cort 6&5 in foursomes during the second session and also dropped a 1-up decision against Cort and Jordan Godwin in their four-ball match in Session 3.
Beach and Caron bounced back with a 1-up victory over Paul O’Hara and David Dixon in the foursomes in Session 4.
Caron also won his singles match to finish 2-2 during the competition.
The PGA Cup is one of several perks for Beach as the reigning PGA Professional Champion. In addition to playing in the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black, the 2007 SAHS graduate will receive entry into six PGA Tour events to be determined during the 2019-20 season.
