Multiple fire departments responded to a pole barn fire near the intersection of Neal Ave. N. and 112th St. N. in Stillwater Township sometime after 8 p.m. Sept. 3.
A group of neighbors gathered near the home to watch over a dozen fire trucks work to put out the fire. One neighbor described hearing a loud boom and seeing plumes of black smoke coming from the pole barn. When he spoke with the homeowner, the homeowner said they had heard what sounded like propane tanks exploding and looked to find the pole barn engulfed in flames.
The fire did not spread to the home and the family is unhurt, the neighbors said.
Due to its rural area and lack of fire hydrants, the Stillwater Fire Department was joined with tanker trucks from departments in Hugo, Marine on St. Croix, Mahtomedi and Bayport to fill a portable water tank. Trucks needed to drive to Stillwater to connect to fire hydrants, fill the tanker trucks and return to the scene.
