The St. Michael-Albertville boys tennis team ended the regular season 10-7 and 6-3 in conference play.

The team lost against Buffalo 1-6 but had but had tight matches at 1,2,4 Singles and 1 doubles but ended up losing all of them to the conference champions this season.

“They are a good team and we hope to face them again in team section postseason play,” coach Geoff Basham said. “Our 1 win came at #3 singles by Leyton Punton 6-1, 6-0.”

On May 9 vs. Big Lake, STMA won 7-0. Big Lake had a shortage of players and had to default 2nd and 3rd doubles positions. Every other position won.

The next day STMA beat Rogers 4-3 in both team’s last ever Mississippi 8 Conference match. Owen Lindstrom put up a good fight at 1st singles against RJ Griffiths but ultimately fell 1-6, 3-6. Owen hopes to play RJ again this season in section individual play. Cobin Szymanski lost in 3 sets against Andy Huber. The team of Noah Anderson and Patrick O’Sullivan lost a 3rd set heartbreaker as well. Leyton Punton won in his typical quick style 6-0, 6-2.

“Leyton finished conference play going a perfect 9-0 (8-0 at 3rd Singles and 1-0 at 2nd Singles) and has a personal record to date of 15-2 with both of his loses coming in 3rd set tiebreakers,” Basham said. “Leyton has been incredibly steady all season and shows poise beyond his grade level of 8th grade.”

STMA got wins at 2nd Doubles from Trent O’Neill/Jack LeZalla and at 3rd Doubles from Rand Matheson/Gabe Hjelle in straight sets. Though Ezra Dickerson’s match wasn’t the last one done, it was a win for him at 2nd singles against previously undefeated in conference play Brandon Chu.

“Ezra played his best match of the season and put everything together to win in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (5),” Basham said.

The team was to find out who they will be playing in post season play Monday evening, May 13, with team play beginning Tuesday, May 14.
