Maple Grove boys swimming earned eight All-Northwest Suburban Conference selections this season.

Senior captains Kelby Modene, Ben Caron and Bjorn Plante, juniors Daniel Baltes, Jalen Liew and Zach Hopp, sophomore TJ Palli and freshman Gerrit Riekels all earned honors.

The Crimson had a successful 2019-20 season with the first 8AA section team title in eight years and a seventh-place finish at the Class 2A state meet out of 43 teams. Maple Grove was also undefeated in conference meets en route to a conference championship.

Maple Grove earned five individual medals and medals for the 200 medley relay at state.

Modene earned All-American Consideration in the 100-yard breaststroke with his fifth-place finish in 56.18 seconds, and he also added a fifth place in the 200 IM.

Baltes took fifth in the 50 freestyle and tied for fifth in the 100 freestyle, and Hopp was seventh in the 100 breaststroke.

Modene, Baltes, Hopp and Riekels also took home medals in the 200 medley relay with an All-American Consideration time of 1:34.27. Modene, Plante, Caron and Baltes also added a ninth-place finish in the 400 free relay at state.

Baltes (50, 100 free), Hopp (100 breaststroke) and Modene (200 IM, 100 breaststroke) also earned All-State awards.

At sections, the Crimson beat out Brainerd by 100 points for the title, 422-322.

The 200 medley relay (Modene, Baltes, Hopp and Riekels) and 400 free relay (Plante, Caron, Liew and Baltes) both won section titles. The 200 free relay (Caron, Modene, Liew and Hopp) was a section runner-up.

Modene won section titles in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, and Baltes won section titles in the 50 and 100 free. Hopp was runner-up in the 100 breaststroke.

Riekels (100 backstroke) and Caron (500 free) just missed individual state berths with third-place finishes, and Plante was fourth in the 200 free.

The three senior captains Caron, Plante and Modene finished their high school careers, but five of the eight all-conference selections are expected back next season.

Coach Matt Caron has already named Leo Williams, diver Brandon Bortnem, Baltes, Hopp and Liew as the 2020-21 senior captains.

Maple Grove will remain experienced next season and should continue to be at or near the top in both conference and section meets.

Other expected returners are juniors Mason Knooihuizen and Langston Philion and underclassmen Logan Cyr, TJ Palli, Gerrit Riekels and Vanwor Worlobah. There are also four divers expected back in Bortnem, Evan Eichten, Zach Johnson and Josh Smith.
