Champlin Park boys lacrosse had a tough first quarter against Andover on May 15 on senior night.

The Rebels (2-7 overall) allowed four unanswered goals after taking a brief lead and ended up trailing by six at halftime in a 12-8 loss. Champlin Park did turn things around in the second half with a 6-4 advantage and cut the deficit to three twice.

Freshman attacker Brett Loughrey scored following an Andover penalty less than a minute-and-a-half into the third quarter, ending a 22-minute scoring drought. Sophomore Kyle Ehrlichman and senior midfielder Devin Miller followed with goals to cut the deficit to 8-5 with 8:32 left in the third.

Andover senior midfielder Blake Larson, senior attacker Holden Dunleavy and junior midfielder Ryan Mielke did push the lead to 11-5 by the end of the third, however.

But the Rebels didn’t give up. Junior attacker Drew Heimer had two shots that went just wide before Miller scored with 10:21 to go.

Heimer later nailed the post, and freshman midfielder Roy Johnson had a shot saved and another go wide before Loughrey scored his second goal of the game to cut the Huskies’ lead to 11-7.

Senior attacker Aaron Moldan scored less than a minute later, and Champlin Park was back to within three goals, trailing 11-8 with 6:43 to go.

The Rebels just couldn’t get any offense going in the final six minutes, and sophomore midfielder Kollin Weikel put the game away with his fourth goal of the game with 3:20 to go.

Johnson and Heimer scored less than a minute a part in the first quarter following an Andover goal by senior midfielder Kyle Nelson to give Champlin Park a 2-1 lead.

That lead was short-lived as Weikel and Dunleavy each scored twice in the final 7:27 of the first quarter to push the Huskies’ lead to 5-2.

Junior midfielder Kyler Hemmer, junior attacker Chase Novak and Weikel all scored in the second quarter for Andover.

Senior goalie Cody Iserman finished with seven saves, and Andover junior goalie Wyatt Smith had five saves.
