The candidate filing period for those interested in running for area city councils is next week. Candidates can file between Aug. 2 and Aug. 16, at 5 p.m. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8.
The deadline for a person to withdraw their candidacy is Aug. 18.
All candidates must be eligible to vote, will be at least 21 years of age on Election Day, and have lived at their residence in the area for at least 30 days before the election.

Champlin
The city of Champlin will have three seats on the ballot- mayor and two council members. All are four-year terms.
The filing fee is $5.

Dayton
Dayton is hosting a primary election Aug. 9 to narrow its candidates for council seats. Voters will elect a total of three candidates in the primary election.
Voters can elect two candidates for the four-year council member seats. These seats are currently held by Julie Gustafson and Scott Salonek. Those who have filed for a chance at one of the two seats are Darren Browen, David Fashant, Jesse Huff-Larson, Ryan Maltzen and Salonek.
There is also a special election for a council member for a two-year term. The seat is currently held on an interim basis by Fashant. Those who have filed for this seat are Dave Pikal, Matt Trost and Bryce Wisnewski.
The primary election will narrow down the number of candidates running for each open seat.
The mayoral seat is also up for reelection, but voters will only be casting their ballots for that seat in the Nov. 8 election. Those who have filed area current mayor Dennis Fisher and current city council member Gustafson.
