The Rogers girls hockey team begins its 2019-20 season on Nov. 8 on the road against Sartell-Sauk Rapids. The Royals finished the 2018-19 regular season with a record of 14-6-5. Rogers, coached by Joel Wesloh, defeated Champlin Park/Cooper in the section final 3-2 in overtime on Feb. 9. The Royals lost 2-1 to Centennial in the Section 5AA semifinal on Feb. 12.
Only two seniors graduated at the end of last season, so almost all of the team’s roster from last season is returning. However, both seniors were Rogers’ top scorers. Forward Samantha Scherling led the Royals in scoring last season with 44 points and was second on the team in goals with 21. Scherling is playing for the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire this season. The other key departure from the Royals is leading goal scorer Marie Reimer. Reimer led the Royals with 22 goals in 25 games played and was second on the team in points with 41. Reimer is playing for St. Catherine University in St. Paul this season.
Key returning players:
Among returning players, forward Allison Hatcher had more goals or points than anyone not named Scherling or Reimer. Hatcher scored 12 goals and 31 points during the regular season. Goaltender Hailey Hartlage led Rogers with 12 wins, a 2.02 goals-against average, a save percentage of .894 and three shutouts.
The Royals’ home opener will be on Friday against Moorhead. Rogers and Elk River fans will get an early holiday present when the Royals face Elk River/Zimmerman Dec. 3. The Royals will have a chance at revenge against Centennial when the two teams square off on Dec. 19 in Rogers.
