Champlin Park baseball came one win shy of making the 5AAAA section final with a 3-0 loss to Osseo on June 3.
The Rebels (9-13 overall) had upset top-seeded Totino-Grace before falling in the section semifinals to Mounds View. The Orioles (14-10) dropped their first game of the section tournament to Champlin Park before winning the next three games, also upsetting Totino-Grace, en route to a rematch with the Rebels in an elimination game.
This time, Osseo used pitching and defense to get the better of Champlin Park. The Orioles turned a triple play on June 3 and allowed just three hits and two walks.
Osseo scored twice in the first and once more in the third for the only runs of the game. Junior John Klein singled home senior AJ Valeri and junior Lucas Partanen in the first, and junior Jake Contreras had an RBI safety squeeze to bring home Valeri in the third.
Champlin Park’s best opportunity to score came in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomores Tanner Thompson and Cameron Hammonds walked with no outs, but a triple play ended the inning.
Junior Tyler Hanson singled for the Rebels in the bottom of the third for the first hit off of Osseo junior Walter Hultgren, but a double play on the next play ended any threat.
Senior Carter Fox singled in the bottom of the fourth but he was out on a fielder’s choice on the next play. Hanson singled with two outs in the fifth, but he was stranded on base.
Hultgren struck out six in seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks.
Senior Vincent Lamberty took the loss. He allowed three earned runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings, striking out one. Senior Jake Vandermeeden allowed three hits in 3 1/3 innings and struck out three.
Seniors Noah Christianson, Dustin Twingstrom, Hayden Stark, Brady Higgins, Tyler Nelson, Fox, Lamberty and Vandermeeden all finished their high school careers.
Juniors Tyler Guckeen, Tyler Hanson, Nick Streitz, Jacob Prosch, Max Mazzei and Max Feggestad; and sophomores Aman Gupta, Cameron Hammonds, Evan Hammonds, James Grindle, Sam Berg and Thompson are all expected back next season.
