Law enforcement officers supported fallen Officer Kevin Hegyi during his Aug. 9 funeral procession from Grace Fellowship Church in Brooklyn Park to Mound Cemetery in Brooklyn Center. The Hopkins officer was struck and killed Aug. 4 while riding a bicycle in his home community of Rogers. Hegyi is formerly of Brooklyn Center. A fundraiser has been set up for his three teenage sons, Cole, Carter and Cody, through Backing the Blue Line, a nonprofit that support Minnesota law enforcement officers and families. During an Aug. 5 press conference, Hopkins Police Chief Brent Johnson and Sergeant Mike Glassberg remembered their fellow officer as a dedicated father. “He set an example of how to be a dad,” Glassberg said. “A lot of us who have to children respected him because of that.” Hegyi was also very well-respected in the law enforcement community, Johnson said. “We’re a very close-knit department,” he said. The department includes 30 sworn officers. “So, it is truly taking an effect on everyone who works in this organization,” Johnson said, noting the support they’ve received from neighboring departments.
