As the prep wrestling season begins to really hit its stride, the Royalton-Upsala wrestling team ran into a couple of state-ranked snags recently.

The Royals went 2-2 in a pair of home triangulars.

First, RU hosted Frazee and No. 7 ranked Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie, Feb. 11.

The Royals notched a 30-27 victory over Frazee in their first match, but were bested by BHVPP, 44-24.

Three wrestlers went 2-0 on the day, Sawyer Simmons Jacob Leibold and Gabe Gorecki.

The triangular was Leibold’s return to action from injury as well.

Of note, coach Terry Gorecki stated that Lane Olson earned his first varsity win against Frazee and Eli Psych earned his first win against BHVPP.

RU followed that night up with another home triangular against Brainerd and Kimball, Saturday, Feb. 13.

The Royals stomped Class 3A Brainerd, 42-19, but fell to No. 6 ranked Kimball, 44-30.

Leibold and Gorecki each went 2-0 with a pair of pins.

RU, who is 10-7 in duals this season, will host yet another triangular, Thursday.

In other wrestling action, the Holdingford wrestling team went head-first into a similar buzz saw.

After earned monster wins over Norwood-Young America (67-9) and Rockford (82-0), Feb. 12, the Huskers were bested by state-ranked titans Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City (49-6) and Kimball (42-27).

Leading the way for Holdingford is William Pilarski (120, 126), who went 4-0 with three pins in the four matches.

Nagel leads Flyers to wins

Little Falls senior wrestler Gabe Nagel broke a pair of school records as the Flyers won three duals recently.

First, Nagel notched his school record 118th pin in a 48-27 victory over Granite Ridge foe, Zimmerman, Feb. 12.

Next, Nagel notched his 197th career win after victories over Deer River and Staples-Motley, Tuesday.

In the win over Deer River, Nagel pinned his opponent to help lead the Flyers to a 52-27 victory.

Also earning pins were Austin Litke (120), Dane Ballou (132), Hank LeClair (145) and Peyton Carll (195).

In the 52-20 Flyers victory over the Cardinals, Nagel won via forfeit, while Mason Rausch (113), Beau Robinson (126), LeClair, Nathaniel Kludt (170), Carll and Eli VanRisseghem (285) all won via pins.

It was not all success for the Flyers, who were swept at a triangular, Jan. 11.

Little Falls couldn’t handle Willmar (50-24) or Buffalo (47-36).

In other action, Pierz had mixed results with a 2-2 week in a pair of triangulars.

First, the Pioneers bested Fergus Falls, 58-22), and fell to Foley, No. 5 in Class AA, 67-5, Feb. 11.

Next, Pierz topped Wadena-Deer Creek, 54-18, but were beaten by another state powerhouse, top-ranked in state, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville, 66-3, Feb. 12.

Pierz (11-9) hosts a triangular, Tuesday, while Little Falls (10-6) is at Albany, Tuesday.
