It went pretty easily for both Pierz and Royalton’s Legion baseball teams in the first round of the North Pod playoffs, Monday.
Both the top-seeded Pierz squad and the No. 2 Royals won in the pod portion of the Central Sub-state playoffs.
Pierz earned an 11-1 win in five innings over Melrose. Michael Leidenfrost hit a two-run home run to walk Pierz off and end the game early.
Andy Winscher had a three-hit night for Pierz, while Michael Burggraff and Ryan Stuckmayer each had two hits.
Ben Virnig earned the win on the hill, allowing four hits in five innings with eight strikeouts.
Royalton scored seven runs in the second to secure a 10-0 win in five against Holdingford, Monday.
Jacob Leibold was brilliant on the mound, allowing no runs on two hits, with zero walks and four strikeouts.
He also drove in two runs on offense, while Grayson Suska was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs for Royalton. Will and Gabe Gorecki and Jake Anderson each scored twice, while Nathan Kolbo had two hits for Royalton.
Royalton and Pierz squared off in the winners’ portion of the pod, Thursday, but results were not available by press time.
As a preview of that playoff contest, the two teams did play Thursday, July 8, with Pierz dominating, 13-1.
Michael Leidenfrost had three hits, three runs and three RBIs, while Kolton Happke also drove in three runs. Stuckmayer had three hits, four runs and two RBIs.
Noah Cekalla was stellar, as he had two hits, two RBIs and a run, and he also pitched all six innings, allowing one run on five hits with seven strikeouts.
