Working for a chiropractor definitely has its perks, said Sam Johnson, office manager at Allison Zak D.C. LLC.
Besides the warm and friendly environment, it is nice to not have to go very far to get a chiropractic treatment from time to time.
“My whole family receives care here. My friends, too,” she said.
Johnson, who has been named as June Employee of the Month by the Little Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, has worked at the chiropractic clinic for six years. In many ways, it was a dream come true as she discovered her passion for chiropractic administration while she was still a student at the Little Falls Community High School (LFCHS).
“It started with that I wanted a job after school hours that wasn’t fast food,” she said.
Johnson said working for Dr. Thomas Heim, a chiropractor who has since died, gave her a lot of on-the-job, hands-on learning.
“I really liked dealing with the people. Once I started, it was an eye-opener how much chiropractic can help people, both young and old. I found it very intriguing,” she said.
She continued working for Dr. Heim for another year after she graduated from LFCHS in 2007.
Knowing she wanted a career within administration, Johnson pursued an associate’s degree in business administration at the Minnesota School of Business in St. Cloud. She graduated in 2010, but not without gaining some more experience by working as a receptionist at an eye clinic in St. Cloud while she attended school.
Before Johnson seized the opportunity to work at Zak’s chiropractic clinic, she worked as a file clerk at Little Falls Orthopedics for a year.
“From there, I interviewed with Allison. I had seen the opening and being it was chiropractic, I wanted to go back to it. I had missed it,” she said.
The best part of working as an office manager at Zak’s are the people she meets and is able to help. Some of her tasks involve answering phones, scheduling appointments, billing insurance companies and patients, marketing, cleaning, snow shoveling and more.
Johnson’s dedication to her work and serving the patients with a smile has not gone unnoticed by Allison Zak.
“Sam shows up every morning with a willingness to work hard and tackle every task thrown her way. Her attitude is second to none and she always treats our patients with respect and kindness. She takes great pride in her work and takes ownership of her responsibilities. We are so lucky to have her working with us,” said Zak.
Although Johnson considers it to be an honor to be named Employee of the Month, she is rather humbled by it. She has never been one to crave the spotlight.
“It’s exciting at the same time as it is nerve-wracking,” she said. “I was very surprised.”
Johnson said she enjoys working with Zak and chiropractor Cameron Voight.
“It’s so rewarding to work with them. They are very in tune with what is going on with their patients and take their time,” she said.
Johnson said she’s also learned a lot from Zak, who is an inspiration to her and someone she looks up to.
“I am very thankful for Allison. She is a great mentor. She works very hard, built this practice from nothing and puts her heart and soul in it and is always thinking of new things,” said Johnson. “Working with her is very refreshing, never gets old and she’s always upbeat. It makes it fun to go to work.”
When Johnson isn’t working, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Brian, and their children Clara, 5, and Jackson, 3.
She also likes being outdoors, flower gardening, being at the lake, fishing and more.
As Employee of the Month, Johnson will receive certificates from Berg’s Bug Removal, Bursch Travel Agency, CHI Health at Home, Fresh Hair Professionals, Friends of Pine Grove Zoo, GoldSmith Jewelers, Perkins Restaurant and Bakery, Pine Ridge Golf Club, Pizza Ranch, Subway in Little Falls, Vacuum Cleaner Outlet and Service Center and the West Side Bar. She will also have a professional photo taken by Maddie B’s Photography.
