Giant, drifting bog removed from Lake Alexander

The removal of a 100-by-300-foot bog from Lake Alexander near Cushing started Tuesday, a task that lasted the Mid-Minn Excavation (Motley) crew several days. The bog detached itself from the green island area on the southeast side of the lake and after floating around, was pushed with a special pontoon by Action Dock (Cushing) to the shoreline near The Castaway Club on Lake Alexander. Ron Wieber, treasurer with the Lake Alexander Lake Improvement District (LID), anticipates the bog removal will cost the LID nearly $100,000, which is two or three times its normal annual expenditure for removal of bogs and invasive weeds. The annual tax assessment next year for property owners will be $75. As major bogs can cause devastating damages to lake property owners, removing the giant bog was necessary, he said.
