Small town Monticello isn’t exactly where you would think to find big time comedy.
Open Mic Comedy Night at Nordic Brewing Company is here to prove you wrong.
Chris Duke, comedian and now host, started these open mics about five months ago and it’s just taken off.
It started as one Tuesday a month and now it’s grown so popular, that Nordic has comedy night every single Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Duke has a friend in St. Cloud that runs a comedy night and that’s where his idea to bring an open mic to Monticello sprouted from.
On Tuesdays you can come before 6:30 p.m., sign up for a five minute time slot and show the crowd how funny you are. I would be quick though, the sheet fills up pretty quickly.
Duke starts every Tuesday off with his set and then turns it over to whoever is willing.
“My goal is to make people laugh, but at it’s core it’s a way to make people feel better and forget about the bad thing that happened during their day,” Duke said. “I’m opening up because I want to make people feel connected.”
If you’re not into performing comedy, but you love to laugh, then come and enjoy with a beer in hand.
Chris Duke’s comedy can be described as, “self deprecating, dad-bod, ridiculous humor.”
He said the setting at Nordic was perfect, because it’s not like most breweries, “It actually has a decent sized event center that’s separate from the actual brewery,” Duke said. “It’s also a good halfway point between St. Cloud and the cities for people to meet up.”
The open mics on Tuesdays have become so loved by the Monticello community, that Nordic has been able to introduce comedy shows.
There first show was on Sept. 26 and Duke is going to continue to recruit comedians and shoot for a goal of one show a month.
Duke has been teaming up with Casey Weber, events coordinator at Nordic Brewing in order to make these nights possible.
So far, they’ve had comedians such as: Shelly Paul, Corey Adam, David Harris, Andrew Witzel and Ryan Kahl just to name a few.
He used to work really hard to get this comedy open mic up and running, but things have changed with time.
“It’s so cool to see the progression,” Duke said. “I used to have to reach out to people and message comedians, but now I don’t really have to do that. We have regulars coming in and people love coming to Nordic in Monticello.”
For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of visiting Nordic Brewing, Duke summed it up.
“It’s very supportive,” he said. “There’s a presence of community and the regulars that show up aren’t keeping to themselves. They’re talking to everyone and wanting to get to know new people and build new relationships, whether that’s with the comedians or with people in the crowd.”
This weekend on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m. Duke will be hosting and big names, John Deboer and Sherlonda Sharp will be performing. Tickets are just $15 and can be purchased on Nordics’ Eventbrite page.
