Monticello’s very own Gabby Witschen shot for the stars at the Minnesota State High School Cross Country Meet on Saturday, Nov. 2 at St. Olaf College.
She had senior Elise Yeager, Coach Gail Grieme, and her whole family cheering her on.
Gabby’s goal this year at state, looked a little bit different than it has in the past three years – and it paid off.
Normally she sets a goal for herself and she tends to make herself nervous. This year, she was just there to enjoy the experience and have fun.
She turned having fun into a personal best run!
Her state time and PR was a magic 19:30.1.
She came in 81st place out of 176 runners in the 2A girls 500 meter run.
Coach Grieme said she was proud of her runner.
“She beat 95 runners and she finishes way higher than last year,” Grieme said. “I was so happy that she ran confidently and she seemed calm this year.”
She shaved a whole two seconds off from her personal best in the section meet – 19:32.5. There’s nothing but potential when it comes to the junior from Monticello.
Gabby ended her 2019 season on a high note and she can’t wait to see what the 2020 season has in store.
Over all the Monticello girls varsity team was in the top three time slots at six meets out of the 10 meets they competed in for the 2019 cross country season.
