Benilde-St. Margaret catcher Evan Brown had a two-out single in the first inning to give the Red Knights a lead they would not relinquish in beating Marshall, 3-1.
Junior Blake Mahmood went the distance for the Red Knights, striking out 11 Tiger hitters while giving up just four hits and a walk. The game remained 1-0 until the seventh when the Red Knights added two insurance runs.
Jonny Woodford singled to start the seventh, he was at third with two outs when Ian Bahr hit a sinking line drive that got by Marshall right fielder Matthew Hmielewski. Woodford scored and Bahr had a triple. Kaleb Welvaert, who replaced Tiger starter Isaac Schmitt after Woodfords hit, was called for a balk allowing Bahr to trot home with the third run.
Marshall's Nicholas Macchio ended the shutout in the bottom the seventh when he drilled a one out Mahmood pitch out of the park. Mahmood struck out the final two batters giving Benilde-St. Margarets a date against Monticello on Friday in the semifinals of Class AAA. Schmitt struck nine while walking just one in his six innings of work for the Tigers
